Liberals care about young Ms. Palin's pregnancy?

9/3/08

Nothing I hate more than a hypocrite: One of our liberal columnists from the Cleveland Ohio "Plain Dealer" newspaper took aim at our new VP candidate today - the amazing Mrs. Sarah-She's-Terrific-Palin - and I had to respond.

Ms. Connie Schultz wrote, "... As of last week, though, there's nothing normal about this teenager's world, which is why this anguished time in her young life has become fodder for media and bloggers around the globe. That's what happens when your mother knows you're expecting but runs for vice president anyway and then sees fit to release a statement about your pregnancy to squelch rumors about her own."

Oh, pulleeez! I wrote to the Editor this evening:

"Don’t kid yourselves, People, Connie could care less about an unwed 17-year-old girl getting pregnant – maybe if it were her daughter – but then it's all about a woman, who happens to be a mother, giving up a really good career opportunity to shield her unwed pregnant teenager from public scrutiny, right?

You’re such a hypocrite, Ms. Schultz, and any woman who buys your rhetoric ought to put her apron back on, keep her feet bare, and forget about allowing their daughters to do anything but stay home, too.

Don’t let any of these girls think about going to college, taking the bar exam, or studying to become a nurse or teacher, or practicing for the Olympics or write a newspaper column, because Connie would have them believe that the pregnancy of their teenager daughter will cause the Earth’s axis to shift and mountains to crumble into the sea. Life as they know it will cease. Oh, wait, I forgot to mention that these young women need not run for political office or God forbid! enlist in the military.

If Connie (or her fellow believers) really cared about this young Palin girl, they wouldn't want her to bear any additional guilt by knowing that her mother gave up a chance, like this campaign, to ... to what? Stay home with the young mom-to-be while she's with child?

Gees, Connie! Tell me you don’t really believe what you wrote. Tell me you were just joking and you were just playing at being the local liberal female voice for the blithely unhappy. I expected better, something other than fiction, from a “woman” who won a Pulitzer."

I have had many conversations with people since Friday morning when Senator McCain made the announcement about picking Gov. Palin to be his running mate. They ask,

"What do you think of McCain's choice?" I love it! I like John McCain even more now than the first time I heard him speak in Rocky River.

I actually already knew who Gov. Palin was (thank you, [correction: ] David Strom!) and was impressed with her intelligent and articulate speech and her goals for Alaska and our energy concerns here in the lower 48.

Then I found out she was a gun owner, former athlete and mother of five. My kind of Vice President! I couldn't be happier with Senator McCain's choice and will continue to defend them both. (Not that they need me to speak up for them, mind you, but I'm available and will serve if called upon to do so.)

I've been a staunch supporter of President Bush and I believe that only two people like McCain and Palin could take W's place in the White House and allow me to sleep at night for four years. My car is already plastered with "McCain" and "Keep America Free and Strong" signs and I'll be thrilled to add the name "Palin" to the posters.

Finally, a group of McCain/Palin supporters will be joining me to watch the senator give his acceptance speech tomorrow evening. I have a little take-away gift for my fellow McCainiacs: a McCain yard sign and some McCain stickers.

These are exciting times we're living in but more's the point they are serious times.
