The president's speech to school children on Tuesday was a very good speech and I hope that kids take the message to heart. Having raised four children I suspect the message will linger in a few but not all; even a few is good, though.
Regarding the president's speech before Congress last night, I'm willing to wait to hear that the Congressional Democrats admit that there has been a change of heart and they are willing to incorporate some of the Republican ideas into the health care reform bill - or at least be willing to start the discussion over again. (There's been no open-door to the White House and I resent the over-used lie that there is.)
There's no reason for Pelosi and Reid to acede to any wishes of the Republicans anywhere in the country so I'm not going to hold my breath.
I'm growing hoarse from yelling at the television and the radio every time the president spreads his lies about his opposition, so it was no surprise to me when Joe Wilson was overcome with anger and responded to the president in kind.
Does President Obama think he's being a great orator when he uses sarcasm to diminish his opponents? It really just makes him look small and effective, but only to his adoring supporters.
I have no respect for the president's constant whining; it makes him sound like a third-world politician. My son said to me today that the president came off sounding like a really good guy, someone who is trying to unite the country. I had to hold my tongue (as usual) because the last thing the president is trying to do is unite the country. If he was trying to be president to all Americans, he wouldn't constantly berate his opposition; and he would stop drawing from the limited bank of derogatory terms to describe the Right.
I would like just one time to be dazzled by the truth. I would love to be bowled over by honesty.
My son is trying to grow into adulthood and get interested in politics, but he's got a lot to learn about that intangible character trait of integrity and honesty in his politicians, no matter which side they are on. I'm a little late to the Table of Politics, I'm older and yes, even a bit wiser, and I'm not fooled.
I'm always on the lookout for truth because it's really the only thing that counts. When all is said and done, a person only has their integrity and it's the only thing that will endure on their memorial. Our children look to us for their inspiration and how to live their lives.
Those of us who have little or no power look to our leadership to keep us free and safe, and when they don't you will hear dissent and plenty of it.
